    WHY CROSSFIT JOZI EAST?
    We decided on CrossFit Jozi East as it ticked a lot of our requirements – close to home, classes that worked with our schedules, a kids programme, and the response time to our initial enquiry.  After meeting with Carl for our introduction and seeing how the box is run as well as how the groundwork ensures that you are safe in all your movements sealed the deal for us.

    HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A MEMBER FOR?
    We joined in March 2017

    WHO INSPIRES YOU AT THE GYM AND IN LIFE?
    Andre, Carl, Tersh, Lisa and Tia are totally inspirational, motivational and enthusiastic. Also, everyone who walks through the door, whether it is their first time or their 100th time is an inspiration.

    WHAT ARE YOU DOING WHEN YOU AREN’T AT THE GYM?
    When we aren’t at the gym we are generally recovering.  Some workouts have left us aching for days afterwards. And we also try and improve our running endurance and might throw in a push up (or ten) and some skipping when we feel the urge.

    WHAT IS THE ONE THING YOU ALWAYS KEEP STOCK OF IN YOUR FRIDGE?
    Cheese

    TELL US ONE INTERESTING THING THAT PEOPLE MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT YOU?
    We are high school sweethearts and have been together for 22 years

    WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO SOMEONE INTERESTED IN STARTING CrossFit?
    Just do it!

    WHAT MOVEMENTS WOULD YOUR PERFECT WORKOUT INCLUDE?
    Most movements are enjoyable, and the way that no WOD is the same makes every session enjoyable. But to be perfectly honest, I would be very happy to never have to do a burpee or sled push again (maybe this question should be what would your perfect workout exclude?

    WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE CLASS AT CFJ EAST?
    Any of the GI Jozi’s are pretty memorable as they always leave us gasping for air and dripping with sweat. It’s always fun to push yourself that little bit harder, faster and further each week.

    WHAT IS THE COOLEST THING THAT YOU HAVE ACHIEVED AT CFJ EAST?
    Everything! We are pushed beyond our limits during each class and have achieved so much in a short space of time. We look forward to crushing our current limits and surging to new heights of health and fitness.

    WHAT CHANGES IN YOUR HEALTH HAVE YOU NOTICED SINCE STARTING?
    Overall we are leaner, meaner and healthier since starting in March with some pretty impressive range of motion improvements too.

    LIST SOME OF YOUR BIG GOALS.
    To be able to do the strict movements (pull ups, push ups / HSPU etc) we are still developing our confidence in the various movements.

    WHY CROSSFIT JOZI EAST?
    I did my first intro class to CrossFit with Crossfit Jozi HQ and so started my journey with CrossFit, CFJ East is also 5mins from where I live.

    HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A MEMBER FOR?
    I have been a member for 7 months but I have been doing CrossFit for over 4 years.

    WHO INSPIRES YOU AT THE GYM AND IN LIFE?
    Well to be honest there isn’t one person who inspires me at the gym, everyone brings something different to the plate.

    WHAT ARE YOU DOING WHEN YOU AREN’T AT THE GYM?
    After training it’s back home to my family, then off to work. That’s the usual routine, I try do some stretching and mobility in the evenings but mostly it’s family time.

    When I am not at CrossFit I cycle and run.

    WHAT IS THE ONE THING YOU ALWAYS KEEP STOCK OF IN YOUR FRIDGE?
    My wife always keeps eggs and bananas well stock, it’s great for quick snacks.

    TELL US ONE INTERESTING THING THAT PEOPLE MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT YOU?
    I won a competition with Virgin active in Matric which allowed me to meet Nelson Mandela and Richard Branson.

    Two very ordinary guys who did something extraordinary, now that’s an inspiration.

    WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO SOMEONE INTERESTED IN STARTING CrossFit?
    I would say try it before you say it’s not for you cause it could lead to something great in your life, even if it be to meet new friends.

    WHAT MOVEMENTS WOULD YOUR PERFECT WORKOUT INCLUDE?
    Cleans, rope climbs, bar muscle ups.

    WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE CLASS AT CFJ EAST?
    When I got 50kg`s Overhead squat, it might not sound like a lot but when I started at CFJ East I hated OHS but now I really enjoy them.

    WHAT IS THE COOLEST THING THAT YOU HAVE ACHIEVED AT CFJ EAST?
    Well for starters being Athlete of the month and most definitely getting my worst movement right, OHS.

    WHAT CHANGES IN YOUR HEALTH HAVE YOU NOTICED SINCE STARTING?
    In general with CrossFit my strength and endurance has changed tremendously, it has helped with all other aspects of what I enjoy doing.

    Some of my goals are to perfect DU’s, hand stand walks and to be able to do this for the rest of my life.

    WHO INSPIRES YOU?
    I’d like to believe that I inspire myself. I have achieved so many things in my live that I thought would never be possible.

    WHAT ARE YOU DOING WHEN YOU AREN’T AT THE GYM?
    I enjoy spending time with my Wife & family / Spending time at the track (superbike racing) / Gardening /  / Boxing and taking dance classes.

    I am actually a very caring & a loving person. I will go out my way to help people.

    My very first session, could barely complete a squat with a pvc pipe (stiffness)

    At this very moment uhmm…..
    Yoghurt / mix veggies / fish / milk / chutney / water / biltong

    WHAT VALUABLE LESSON HAVE YOU LEARNED IN THIS PAST YEAR?
    To never take anyone for granted and make an effort to show the special one in your life that you love, respect and appreciate them. You can get so busy and caught up in your own things in the everyday life that you miss the most important parts of your life, and people in your life slipping away.

    WHAT IS THE COOLEST THING THAT YOU HAVE ACHIEVED AT CFJ EAST?
    Being able to squat and deadlift safely without injuring myself

    WHAT CHANGES IN YOUR HEALTH HAVE YOU NOTICED SINCE STARTING?
    Definitely lost some fat / gained stamina / improved my overall flexibility and huge improvement on my lap times around the track

    CHALMAR BEEF ATHLETE OF THE MONTH: NOV/DEC 2016

    With the majority of the community heading off to enjoy the holidays in December we decided to hold onto Colin’s Athlete of the month profile so that everyone could get to know one of CFJ East’s strongest 😉

    Husband and wife team Colin and Florence joined us in July 2016 and have spent the past 6 months refining their movement and technique and enjoying classes in their favourite time slot at 17H30. Their two rockstar children Amy-Jane and Vaughn have been spending time developing their fitness in our kids classes under the experienced guidance of coach Tia.

    WHY CrossFit Jozi East?
    Well to honest, why not…???
    CrossFit Jozi East is such a well oiled machine.
    Everything at the Box makes me feel like I wanna be part of it.

    HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A MEMBER FOR?
    The Journey started in July 2016

    WHO INSPIRES YOU AT THE GYM AND IN LIFE?
    I’m not really that kinda guy that draws inspiration from one person, bits and pieces from everyone inspires me.

    If you know Florence’s athletic background (which is non-existent), then I’d say she really inspires me, her technique and form just always leaves me amazed.

    WHAT ARE YOU DOING WHEN YOU AREN’T AT THE GYM?
    O man, how much time have you got….
    I’m a total family man, everything I do involves them.

    I’ve also been told to calm down a bit with all my hobbies, so I kept two – Bass Fishing and anything Gun related.

     

    WHAT IS THE ONE THING YOU ALWAYS KEEP STOCK OF IN YOUR FRIDGE?
    If peanut butter needed to be in a fridge, then Peanut Butter.

    You know if someone tells you that you’ve put too much peanut butter on something, then you should get rid of that person in your life. YOU DON’T NEED SUCH NEGATIVITY AROUND YOU….hahahaha

    TELL US ONE INTERESTING THING THAT PEOPLE MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT YOU?
    I’m a Virgo, so that says it all.

    WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO SOMEONE INTERESTED IN STARTING CrossFit?
    Forget all the trash talk you hear about CrossFfit, and join CFJE.
    I once was that trash talking dude, and now I can’t get enough of CrossFit.

    WHAT MOVEMENTS WOULD YOUR PERFECT WORKOUT INCLUDE?
    I’m a Barbell junkie, happiest when heavy weights are moved.

    WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE CLASS AT CFJ EAST?
    The One handstand class, I managed a 2m handstand walk – I couldn’t care what happened after that in class.

    WHAT IS THE COOLEST THING THAT YOU HAVE ACHIEVED AT CFJ EAST?
    There is really to many of them to mention, Handstand Walks, Rope Climbs, The Spring Throwdown

  • Athlete of the Month - CFJ East

    CHALMAR BEEF ATHLETE OF THE MONTH: OCTOBER 2016

    As a coach I take my role quite seriously, perhaps too seriously at times but I value the role my coach (Imtiaz) played in the early stages of my development as an athlete. He helped me to achieve some incredible goals and feats in a relatively short period of time. Sure, some of these achievements were aesthetic goals I had planned years before and had never managed to tackle on my own, but some happened on the fly, when I was focusing on my movement and simply having fun and working hard. Magic exists.

    When we select an athlete of the month at the CFJ facilities, we look at a few things that we as coaches place value on. A members commitment to training and consistency in training, their focus on movement proficiency, determination to get better than yesterday and also their attitude towards and interaction with the their training “crew” and the community – community spirit.

    Marga Steenkamp is CFJ East Athlete of the Month for October 2016 because she exudes these traits and has done so since beginning her journey to fitness. Congratulations Marga, you deserve the nomination and have worked your butt off to achieve the goals you have!

    When I sat down with Marga to complete a video interview with her as part of her nomination, it was a little noisy at the box so we landed up watching the 5:30pm crew training, whilst we caught up. To go back to the role of a coach – I was reminded of just how important this role is over the next 30 minutes.

    Marga is the matriarch of the Steenkamp family. She has put her family first for the better part of 30 years and that won’t stop. Her role as mother, wife, caregiver and bookkeeper at a school have required her to put tremendous effort into others – To give of herself. No easy role here and responsibility that is incredibly rewarding but requires resolve and resilience over the long haul.

    When her son-in-law Wessel joined CrossFit Jozi about 5 years ago, he couldn’t stop talking about CrossFit at family dinners. Marlize, one of Marga’s daughters was next to join CFJ 2 years later,  just before her and Wessel got married, and Anneli (Marlize’s sister) just after her. Marga joined CrossFit Jozi East towards the end of April 2016 and was inspired to join her family because of their enthusiasm and enjoyment of CrossFit. She was also advised that exercise and living a more active lifestyle would assist with alleviating the sometimes unbearable symptoms of menopause which she had been experiencing for some time.

    Marga got a bit more than she bargained for. She trains at CFJ East, her home location most evenings with her crew – Shirley, Gayatri, Tanya and others. She’s found a strong and supportive circle outside of the norm, a “diverse group of like-minded people” as she puts it so aptly. She’s finding herself again, getting stronger each day and working on her, for her. She has found a space where each minute is physically demanding but rewarding. An introspective experience that she is guided through by experienced coaches but more importantly, has full control over. Control over her body, control over the effort she puts in and control over the environment.

    Marga’s experience and her testimony are a reflection of the true CrossFit experience. Everyone hates burpees, some more than others. The barbell can be unforgiving at the start of a cold dark winter morning or after a tough day at the office, but the magic is in the movement – A simple and powerful means to a fulfilling end.
